Sid Melton wurde 1920 in Brooklyn als Sidney Meltzer geboren und begann seine Karriere am jüdischen Theater in New York wo sein Vater ein bekannter Komödiant war. 1939 machte er sein Broadway Debüt in dem Stück „See My Lawyer“. Kurz danach übersiedelte er nach Hollywood um sich beim Film zu versuchen. Sein Filmdebüt machte er in der klassischen Komödie „Shadow of the Thin Man“ („Der Schatten des dünnen Mannes“, 1941). Melton trat in kleinen Rollen in unzähligen Filmen der 40iger und 50iger Jahre auf, oft auch nur als Statist. Darunter „On the Town“ („Heute gehen wir bummeln“, 1949 mit Sinatra und Gene Kelly), „The Lemon Drop Kid“ (1951, mit Bob Hope). Gegen Ende der 50iger Jahre fand er seine Nische im Fernsehen und war von da an in unzähligen Serien zu sehen. Darunter Klassiker wie „I Love Lucy“, „Bonanza“, „The Dick Van Dyke Show“, “The Munsters”, “Bezaubernde Jeannie” etc.
1966 erhielt er die Rolle von Alf Monroe in der Hit-Sitcom “Green Acres” (mit ZsaZsa Schwester Eva Gabor), und erreichte den Höhepunkt seiner Karriere.
In den 90iger Jahren stand er noch vereinzelt für die Serien „Empty Nest“ und “Blossom” vor der Kamera und trat 1997 in den Ruhestand. Sid Melton lebt noch heute in Los Angeles.
